Little Brother is a novel by Cory Doctorow, published by Tor Books. It was released on April 29, 2008. The novel is about several teenagers in San Francisco who, in the aftermath of a terrorist attack on the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge and BART system, defend themselves against the Department of Homeland Security‘s attacks on the Bill of Rights. The novel is also available free on the author’s website under a Creative Commons license.

The book debuted at No. 9 on the New York Times Bestseller List, children’s chapter book section, in May 2008. As of July 2, it had spent a total of six weeks on the list, rising to the No. 8 spot.^[3] Little Brother has also won the 2009 White Pine Award,the 2009 Prometheus Award. and the 2009 John W. Campbell Memorial Award

Little Brother was a finalist for the Hugo Award for Best Novel.^[6]

Turn on Bash Smart Completion

The Bash shell has this sweet feature where you can use the TAB key to auto-complete certain things. For example, when I am in my home directory, the following command:
$cd Do[TAB-key]
will automatically yield:
$cd Documents

If you are an absolute novice, like I was, not so long ago, discovering tab completion in the terminal can make you go “Wow!”. Wait till you hear the rest now

Though you can use the TAB key to complete the names of files and directories, by default the completion is pretty “dumb”. If you have already typed $cd D you would expect that the tab key would cause only the directory names to be completed, but if I try it on my machine, the tab completion tool uses filenames too.

Now, don’t despair! There is now a smart bash tab completion trick you can use. Smart completion even complete the arguments to commands!!

To enable smart completion, edit your /etc/bash.bashrc file. Uncomment the following lines, by removing the # in the beginning of the lines:
#if [ -f /etc/bash_completion ]; then # . /etc/bash_completion #fi

Now you can use tab completion to power your way through commands.

You can even extend bash smart completion to your own favourite commands by using /etc/bash_completion, the “complete” utility and /etc/bash_completion.d . Explaining the nitty-gritty is beyond me. I refer you to the Debian Administration gurus for more information regarding smarter bash completion.

Install LinuxMint12 extensions Mate & MGSE in Ubuntu 11.10

Linux Mint 12 RC comes with two option of desktop environment: One built with GNOME 3.2 and MGSE and other with GNOME 2.3 and MATE. In this post we will show how to Gnome shell extenstion Mate for LinuxMint in Ubuntu11.10.

First if you didn hear about ‘Mate”, it is a fork of Gnome 2 which is compatible with Gnome 3. Thanks to MATE, you can run both versions of Gnome on the same system.MATE is brand new, it’s not completely stable yet, and it’s missing a few parts. It’s being actively maintained and with close collaboration between the MATE developers and Linux Mint. With time the project will gain maturity and provide users with a traditional and solid desktop experience.⁽¹⁾

For “MGSE” (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions) is a desktop layer on top of Gnome 3 that makes it possible for you to use Gnome 3 in a traditional way. You can disable all components within MGSE to get a pure Gnome 3 experience, or you can enable all of them to get a Gnome 3 desktop that is similar to what you’ve been using before. Of course you can also pick and only enable the components you like to design your own desktop.⁽¹⁾

You can install Mate and MGSE extension (LinuxMint new Menu) in Ubuntu 11.10 by using the Mintrespository:

1- Open terminal and enter the following commands:

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

2- Now add the following line at the bottom of the file:

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ lisa main upstream import

3- Now refresh repository:

sudo apt-get update

4- When refreshing the repository you will got the following error:

 W: GPG error: http://packages.linuxmint.com lisa Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because
the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 3EE67F3D0FF405B2

5- This command will correct the error above:

 sudo apt-get install linuxmint-keyring 

 sudo apt-get update

Now open ubuntu software center and check if Mint repository has been added:

6- Now install Mint Mate using the followng command:

sudo apt-get install mint-meta-mate

Remember since Mint repository was added, you can install any Mint extension, for example to install the new Mint MGSE extension in Ubuntu 11.10, just open Ubuntu software center and search Mint MGSE.

Now to enter to the new Mate enveriment, logout and choose to Login into Mate:

Fixing CPU fan on Lenovo Thinkpad T520

Issue: CPU fan on Lenovo Thinkpad T520 is always on.

OS: Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS Lucid Lynx with backported kernels from Oneiric.

Solution:

1. install thinkfan package:

$ sudo apt-get install thinkfan

2. add kernel module ‘coretemp’ to /etc/modules

$ sudo sh -c ‘echo coretemp >> /etc/modules’

3. load kernel module ‘coretemp’

$ sudo modprobe coretemp

4. add the following three sensor entries to /etc/thinkfan.conf just before the temperature levels:

sensor /sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/temp1_input
sensor /sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/temp2_input
sensor /sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/temp3_input
sensor /sys/devices/virtual/hwmon/hwmon0/temp1_input

[ edit the file /etc/thinkfan.conf with your favourite editor, e.g. 'sudo gedit /etc/thinkfan.conf' ]

5. add the following to /etc/modprobe.d/thinkfan.conf: ‘options thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1′

$ sudo sh -c ‘echo “options thinkpad_acpi fan_control=1″ >> /etc/modprobe.d/thinkfan.conf’

6. reload kernel module ‘thinkpad_acpi’

$ sudo modprobe -r thinkpad_acpi
$ sudo modprobe thinkpad_acpi

7. set START=”yes” in /etc/default/thinkfan

[ edit the file /etc/default/thinkfan with your favourite editor, e.g. 'sudo gedit /etc/default/thinkfan' ]

8. start thinkfan:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/thinkfan start

9. check whether it works

$ sudo cat /proc/acpi/ibm/fan

if level has a value between 0 and 7, and changes by times, your thinkfan daemon works.

Improving power consumption on Ubuntu laptop with ‘Sandy Bridge’ processor

*Tested on: Lenovo ThinkPad T520 with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) and backported kernel 3.0.0-13

Recently I found interesting articles about increased power consumption on Sandy Bridge processors with new generations of Linux kernels.

According to article http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=intel_i915_power&num=1 there is a solution for this issue.

So, with a help of uncle Google and this article: http://www.techytalk.info/linux-kernel-2-6-38-2-6-39-power-regression-workaround/#more-1972 I finally managed to test it. I was honestly surprised by result, since at beginning I was quite sceptic, primarily because I’m not experienced Linux user and I had reasonable doubts about my ability to do something like this.

I tested it step by step, and I done lot’s of measuring and rebooting, but I’ll describe only final steps.

a) I tried some tools for observing/monitoring, but at the end I liked and used these two: powertop and dstat. They are both in repository, so installing is simple:

sudo apt-get install powertop dstat

Using of powertop is simple. Just issue a command:

powertop

For dstat there are some parameters that u can find in man or issuing dstat –help. I used this command:

dstat --time --power --battery --battery-remain 10

Laptop was running on battery only, and before I changed anything I measured its power consumption in a conditions that I’ll test every time I change something in grub conf file.
Initial power usage was ~20W.

1. Open GRUB configuration file:

gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub

2. Find the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT line
(usually looks like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash”)

3. Change that line into

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash pcie_aspm=force pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1″

(details about every option can be found on mentioned link)

4. run command to update GRUB configuration:

sudo update-grub

5. restart computer

In my case I had final power consumption of ~12W in the same conditions as I started observing/measuring. Comparing it to initial ~20W I found it as quite successful venture.

The next thing I decided to fix was Bluetooth. Damn thing was turned on every time I reboot computer, no mater I was keep turning it off. >:[

Thanks to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/+bug/381913, I finally managed to turn it off on startup:

I created file .profile in my home folder and I put this command there:

rfkill block bluetooth

That fixed problem with untamed Bluetooth, and it additionally improved power consumption.

gm-notify – The Highly Ubuntu Integrated Gmail Notifier

Installation

Maverick Meerkat (10.10)

gm-notify finally made it into the universe repository. So all you have to do is installing the gm-notify package either via Synaptic or with the command line:

sudo apt-get install gm-notify

done

Lucid Lynx (10.04 LTS)

Lucid is Ubuntu’s Long Term Support version and also has a working version of gm-notify, although this won’t be supported with new features.

To install this you have to add the PPA and install the gm-notify package out of it. Here are some step-by-step instructions:

First, make sure you are running a Ubuntu Lucid (10.04). Karmic might work, too – but I won’t promise that. Now, you have to add the PPA to your software sources. Do this by typing

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gm-notify-maintainers/ppa
sudo apt-get update

into a terminal and you’re almost ready. Finally, you have to install the gm-notify package either via Synaptic or again with the command line:

sudo apt-get install gm-notify

done

Usage

Click on the Indicator Applet next to the clock and select Google Mail.

The configuration dialog will appear where you have to enter your credentials. Please make sure that you use your full Gmail / Google Talk address including @googlemail.com or whatever. Now click Apply and Close. Everything is up and running as you can confirm in the Applet. Have fun

Configuration

Normally, it will open the configuration interface when you first use this program. But if you already had a gm-notify instance installed and you need to change the credentials or you want to reconfigure it for some other reason, you’ll find the configuration interface at System->Settings->GMail Notifier Configuration.

Troubleshooting

If the config utility won’t accept your credentials please make sure you entered your whole address and that Google Talk is enabled for your account!

Installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) on Lenovo ThinkPad T520

This process is tested with Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS 64-bit.
(Sandy Bridge, Intel i5-2410M processor, Intel HD 3000 graphic, Intel 82579LM eth card, Intel Advanced-N 6250 wifi card)

1. Download latest ISO at http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

2. Download latest Intel e1000e driver at http://downloadcenter.intel.com/ and save downloaded file to USB drive.

3. Start your laptop and choose live session (“Try Ubuntu“).

You’ll notice that there is no any kind of network connection at the moment.
Mount your USB drive and go to the folder where your Intel e1000e driver is located.
Untar/unzip archive:

tar zxf e1000e-x.x.x.tar.gz

Change to the driver src directory:

cd e1000e-x.x.x/src/

Compile the driver module:

sudo make install

Load the module using either the insmod or modprobe command:

sudo modprobe e1000e

At this point your network adapter should start working. Detailed information about installing the driver can be found on http://downloadmirror.intel.com/15817/eng/README.txt

4. Now when you are able to connect to Internet you can install Ubuntu.

5. After restarting a computer, you have to repeat procedure for installing network card. (step 3)

6. Now you have to add next ppa’s:

apt-add-repository ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa
apt-add-repository ppa:glasen/intel-driver
apt-add-repository ppa:f-hackenberger/x220-intel-mesa
apt-get update

*If ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa doesnt work for you, you can try ppa:canonical-kernel-team/ppa

7. Install latest available backport kernel:

sudo apt-get install -y linux-image-generic-lts-backport-oneiric linux-headers-generic-lts-backport-oneiric

8. Update your packages:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y

9. Restart your computer.

Dependency error when trying to install Dropbox on Debian

I use Dropbox on all of my systems and while not very secure, Dropbox is a quick and easy way to backup and share files. I recently rebuilt a machine with Debian 6 to use it as a test server for some of the work I am doing on some web apps and when I tried to install the .deb package you can download from the Dropbox web site, I was getting this annoying error message that said Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libnautilus-extension1 (>= 1:2.22.2).

On the site, Dropbox offers installable packages for the Fedora and Ubuntu distributions of Linux. Well, I am using Debian and Ubuntu, being a Debian-based distro, should be compatible, right? You would think so… Turns out that the issue is in a dependency in the manifest of the Ubuntu package, as the error message has already alluded to.

Technically, you could download the Dropbox source tar ball and compile it yourself, but what’s the fun in that… I like to get to the bottom of things.

I downloaded the nautilus-dropbox_0.6.7_amd64.deb package and when you try to install it using dpkg -i you’ll get broken packages. That tells me that the problem was not with the dependencies themselves, but with the .deb manifest inside the package not specifying dependencies correctly. In order to fix this you will need to unpack the .deb file, change the dependency specification and then repackage it. Here’s how you can do that:

Go to the place where you download the Dropbox .deb file to. This is usually the Downloads folder inside your home directory.

Create a new directory to extract the package tomkdir -p extract/DEBIAN

Extract the files from the .deb packagedpkg -x nautilus-dropbox_0.6.7_amd64.deb extract/

Extract the control information (manifest) from the packagedpkg -e nautilus-dropbox_0.6.7_amd64.deb extract/DEBIAN

Open the extract/DEBIAN/control file with your favorite editor

Find the dependencies line, which starts with the text Depends:

On that line, look for the offending dependency spec: libnautilus-extension1 (>= 1:2.22.2)

Notice the version number of this dependency. On my Debian 6 machine, the version of that library is 2.30.1. Notice that the Ubuntu package has a 1: prepended to the package version number in the dependency spec. To make it work in Debian 6 you will need to edit that to remove the 1: from the spec so that it looks like this: libnautilus-extension1 (>= 2.22.2)

Save the file and exit your editor

Create a new directory called buildmkdir build

Rebuild the .deb package by using the following command:dpkg-deb -b extract/ build/

You will notice that a brand new .deb package is now available in the build directory you just created.

Now you can install this new package by issuing the commanddpkg -i nautilus-dropbox_0.6.7_amd64.debwhile in the build directory.

You should now be able to use your Dropbox without any installation problems. While this problem solving exercise was fun, there is also an easier way to accomplish the same end result and that is to download the Dropbox source tarball and run the usual configure, make, make install trifecta.

Removing desktop environments on Ubuntu

!!! It’s possible that the commands might remove some other packages you have since added to the default and want to keep. If that’s the case, keep track of which packages those are and reinstall them. Your settings should still be there.
