Conky NotifyOSD
“notifyOSD Conky” is a simple Conky setup created by BigRZA that displays the CPU usage / temperature, RAM and HDD usage as well as the network traffic.

To use it, download the configuration from DeviantArt, extract the downloaded archive and place the configuration files in your home folder (the archive contains hidden files so press CTRL + H to see them).
Of course, you’ll also need Conky so install it if you didn’t already:
sudo apt-get install conky

For getting the temperature to work, see step 2 in this post.

Emesene2
After a long period of development, Emesene 2 (stable) has finally been released, this being a complete re-write of the initial Emesene in GTK / pygtk.
Starting with version 2, Emesene supports Gtalk and Facebook or any XMPP/Jabber network (along with MSN of course). Other changes in Emesene 2 include: support for adium-like themes, Ubuntu Messaging Menu (and MeMenu integration for Natty) support and lots more.

Also, Emesene 2 uses “papylib” which is also used by Empathy. This brings many advantages like:

Complete p2p support, msnp18, great address book and msn profile handling. Being so widespread allows you, the user, to get the latest 0day fixes from your favourite distro (if you’re using GNU/Linux of course) and new features as soon as we plug them into Emesene.

For more info on Emesene 2, check out the release announcement. More

Backup Gmail
A while back we wrote about backing up a Gmail account using Thunderbird. That doesn’t work for restoring but you could at least have access to all your old emails.

‘Backup Gmail’ can backup / restore Gmail emails using a GUI or via command line

But I’ve recently discovered a small application that allows you to both backup and restore your Gmail emails in Linux with just a few clicks. The application is called “Backup Gmail” and you can use it to backup Gmail either from the command line or using a graphical user interface. It uses IMAP, meaning that restoring your emails will also restore their labels!

Skype 2.2 beta for Linux – video is not working?

On April 6th, Skype released new beta for LinuxSkype 2.2 beta for Linux with Skype Access and improved audio/video quality
Video wasn’t improved for me. Quite opposite, it didn’t work at all. But solution was listed in section “Known issues” on Skype’s Garage blog:

Category: Video
Description: Your video capture might show seldomly green, scrambled or black image.
Workaround:
Please install one additional package which might solve your problem:
- Ubuntu 32 bit: install “”libv4l-0″” package and launch Skype with: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype
- Ubuntu 64 bit: install “”lib32v4l-0″” package and launch Skype with: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype
- Other distributions might have the same library, but may have a different path.

Change Skype launcher to

bash -c 'LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype'

and video will hopefully work.

Haguichi (Hamachi GUI) 1.0.7 Gets AppIndicator Support

Haguichi
Haguichi is a popular Hamachi (including Hamachi2) GUI for Gnome.
Haguichi 1.0.7 has been released, the big news being that it finally adds AppIndicator support so you don’t need to tweak the notification area in Ubuntu 11.04 to get Hamachi to show up (but of course, the AppIndicator works in older Ubuntu versions too).
As usual, I’ve updated the Haguichi PPA (this is basically the official PPA) so you can easily stay up to date with new versions in Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04. More

Make KDE Applications Look Native In GNOME (With Ubuntu Ambiance Style)

KDE Gnome
(Dolphin running in Gnome)
Getting KDE applications to look native in Gnome is rather easy (contrary to what you may think when looking at the lenghty instructions below – it’s actually just a few clicks) thanks to an Ambiance KDE style created by WebUpd8 reader Alaukik. This means that while the instructions below work with any GTK theme, you’ll need a KDE style similar to the one created by Alaukik for your current GTK theme to get everything looking properly.
